Nirupama Devi was an Indian fiction writer and she was born on May 7, 1883. She hailed from Berhampore in Murshidabad District, West Bengal, India. Srimati Devi was her literary pseudonym. She died on January 7, 1951.

Nirupama Devi’s father’s name was Nafar Chandra Bhatta and he was a judicial employee. Nirupama Devi’s education happened at her home.

Nirupama Devi got inspiration from her elder brother, Bibhuti Bhusan Bhatta, and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Her work was appreciated and awarded for celebrating the womanhood’s virtues despite societal challenges. 

Nirupama Devi’s Noteworthy Awards and Accolades

Nirupama Devi has received awards and accolades to honor her contribution to literature. 

In 1938, she got the ‘Bhubanmohini Gold Medal,’ and in 1943, she received the “Jagattarini Gold Medal’ from the University of Calcutta, which is located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, and is a public state University. Her works like Bandhu, Annapurnar Mandir, and Didi have also got published in the hand-written magazine.

Famous Books and Work of Nirupama Devi

The first novel written by Nirupama Devi was Uchchhrinkhal. In 1913, she wrote Annapurnar Mandir, of which Naresh Mitra made a film with a similar name in 1954. Her work “Didi,” which she wrote in 1915, explores the difficulties and challenges faced by women in society. This work of hers presents significance and highlights the women’s constant effort to navigate the struggles in their fight for equality.
